My eye is dry when I wake up?!

Question: My eye is dry when I wake up?
On the corner of my left eye farthest from the nose it's a little red and when I wake up I can barely open my eye. This happened when I woke up last Friday and I want this cured. It's dry and it itches a lot, and when I itch it I'm afraid my eye will almost close up. Please help me out and thank you

Persistent dryness, scratching and burning in your eyes are signs of dry eye syndrome.
Dry eye syndrome has several causes. It occurs as a part of the natural aging process, especially during menopause; as a side effect of many medications, such as antihistamines, antidepressants, certain blood pressure medicines, Parkinson's medications and birth control pills; or because you live in a dry, dusty or windy climate.

If your home or office has air conditioning or a dry heating system, that too can dry out your eyes. Another cause is insufficient blinking, such as when you're staring at a computer screen all day.

Dry eyes also are a symptom of systemic diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ocular rosacea or Sjogren's syndrome (a triad of dry eyes, dry mouth and rheumatoid arthritis or lupus).

Immediate solution could be eye gel.

Try using over the counter eye drops for dry eyes. If it doesn't help, schedule an appointment with an eye specialist.

Everyone should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam every few years. Most of us don't see an Ophthalmologist or optometrist until we have a real problem, which might have been prevented or minimized if we had regular exams.
