Do I need glasses, :(?!

Question: Do I need glasses, :(?
Well, I got my eye screening today at the doctor, (I'm 14 years old) and I got some wrong and had trouble with one of the lines on the eye chart and she said I need to go see an eye doctor. I already knew my eyesight is getting a bit worse, cause in school, sometimes I can't see the board when I am in the back or something like that. Do I need glasses? I really do not want to get them, and both my parents have good eyesight, so I don't know why this is happening. Could it be because I spend too much time on the computer? Is there anyway to reverse this, and improve my eyesight? Like will eating carrots work? ...

you should follow the doctor's advice and see an optometrist to check your vision. most probably you'd need vision aid, and if you're reluctant to wear glasses, you should try contact lenses. also, your lifestyle, ie. staring too much at the computer, may contribute to your vision problem.

while carrots can help to restore your vision, its effect can't be felt straight away. so at the moment, you should use vision aid to stop your vision from getting worse. other than carrots, you should consume spinach, vitamin-A-fortified milk, and other food rich in vitamin C,E, and A. in addition, you should take regular five minute eye rests after every hour of computer work.

Yes, there is a way to start correcting your eyesight; it is getting glasses or contact lenses. There have been advancements with contact lenses in the last 5 years, and they are softer and easier to put in your eyes. If you are really against wearing glasses (and in there are some very cute designer glasses out now) then contact lenses are the way to go. Either way, you have to wear something, because your eyesight will only get worse if you don't.

First of all, carrots will work after a long period of time. You will need glasses in the mean time though, especially if you can't see the board. You are probably in high school, so grades are important now. Or, you could get contacts (one a day, once every 2 weeks, once a month, or permanent).

You cant really improve your eyesight. Carrots only help keep your eyes healthy, but if your getting worse, carrots wont help. Your computer is probably messing you up. You can go on it, but once you start getting bleary eyed or bloodshot, get off for the night.
And anyways, glasses arnt bad imo, they look really nice on a girl.

Eye doctors are just money-making people who are into lenses (magnifying glass, binoculars, telescope etc.) They dont have a clue about the lives of normal people who have social lives (people like you and me).

That means the only thing they know is how to sell their product, make their product seem attractive to the customer and convince the customer that its really important to use it everyday because it "improves" their life.

However lenses (glasses) have never been proven to help someone with bad eyesight who simply got it from having bad vision habits. permanent shortsightedness is created from the eyeball changing shape to become elongated from front to back..
And with some kids its just the case that they never were interested to see things clearly in 20/20 vision.

You see everyone is in the same boat at birth. We all are born short sighted. Once outside the womb our brains have to start engaging with our surroundings. That way we adjust to life as a human being. Because of the importance of seeing objects further away than the end of the baby's nose the baby's eyes adapt to become better at seeing the distance.

If we are talking about too much near work then scientists can already say that too much near work is dangerous. They found this out by doing tests on baby monkeys in a lab. They forced them to wear hoods all the time so to limit the distance they could see. They found out when they grew up that all of them became myopic (shortsighted)*

In life theres nothing unlawful about someone having bad eyesight. And theres nothing unlawful about someone being blind. There are people walking the streets blind and it doesn't cause anyone a problem.
However i feel its a bit out of order for someone to trap kids (like you) into one option (to wear glasses) and also trap you into having to pay for them or feel bad. A child having an eyesight test isn't going to be the best expert in the world on eyesight and glasses. That means he/she will vulnerable to any pressure from the salesperson to buy whatever they they want the child to buy.
(Sure they might smile at the time and give out candy, but they are still creepy).

ok so maybe your interest now is to improve your vision. If you're 100% interested in this then you can try it now. That is if you think you can match these people:

Youre only 14 so i think you should take the advantage of still being young to give it a try. But be warned that you have to want good eyesight above anything else. You have to also be willing to change your behaviour when noticing your eyesight is getting bad (due to having the wrong approach).

This website has good advice:

By the way theres also evidence that kids in countries that dont play outside as much as other places are likely to end up with worse eyesight. Heres a link to the evidence (its writen with heavy talk so forgive me if its boring to read):

Ok have a nice day. bye

*If you felt bad about the baby monkeys being tested on then make sure you take on board what they found out. That way they dont need to do it again!

i was just like you, i thought i had really good eyesight and when i put my first pair of glasses on i was in a new world and seeing new things.
Both my parents have good eyesight and i don't so it can be caused by your environment like the computer.
Glasses ain't that bad ok they get really annoying but they have really nice design these days especially for kids, i got glasses when i as 8 and im now 17 and stuck with them for life unless i get surgery which im think of.
I understand why you don't want to where them your a teenager and your at that time when you just don't wont to stand, but sometimes its nice to be seen different, change is good.

You're at an age when problems with vision start to show. The sort of problem you have is due to your eyeball not being quite the right shape so light isn't focused correctly. It shows as you grow because all parts of you are growing. If you can't see the board from the back then you are starting to get near sighted ( can't see things far away), however the problem isn't that bad. There is no why about this - why is your nose the shape it is, its one of those things. You can't do anything to make it better, eye exercises, eating anything etc won't make it better. Neither will using the computer or TV make it worse. Both are a complete myth. Computers do strain your eyes but they dont' cause permanent problems - look for the multiple things on answers as to how to sit properly at teh screen. Don't make yourself miserable thinking you have to give up things you enjoy. Both my parents had good eyesight but mine is terrible - this can be a problem as its sometimes difficult for parents to appreciate how you feel about your eyesight so try and take time to explain to them.

Noone wants to wear glasses but they do help you see properly and especially at school it can make a big difference. These days contacts are really good and easy to wear and as you get older there is teh possiblity of laser surgery.
