Gas Permeable Rigid contacts hurt so bad! When will I be used to them?!

Question: Gas Permeable Rigid contacts hurt so bad! When will I be used to them?
I've been on a soft contact lens for a few years now. But by eye doctor really wanted to put me on a gas permeable lens due to my correction (-14) and astigmatism. I denied at first to use the hard contacts, but I realized that I couldn't see that well at all with my soft contact lenses, and they are as strong as they can make them for the soft lenses. So today he put me on GPR lenses, and they hurt so bad when he put them in! He had to numb my eye then put them in again! And if feels like they're always moving... I hate it. He told me to wear them one hour a day, then add on hours each day. But when will I get used to them? They feel aweful! Will they ever feel like soft lenses?

RGPs are less comfortable than soft. Your lenses may be worse than some peoples because of your high power. Just like your glasses, your contacts have thicker edges and are heavier than people with lower power. Your doctor may be able to make changes in your lenses to make them more comfortable. It is some times hard to evaluate lenses when the patient is tearing up a lot. Studies say that after a month people report that RGPs are as comfortable as soft lenses. I wore them for 20 years and claimed they were comfortable but I always took them out when I came home from work. Mormally, we don't let patients wear soft lenses first if we intend for them to wear RGPs.

I was a wearer of gas perms for over 20 years.
the inside of your eyelid has to become calloused for them to feel comfortable.
that's why your doc said an hour a day and add on time. if you do more, it will be unbearable.
they DO feel funny for awhile, like they're slipping around.
in a month, you'll forget youre wearing them. believe me. good luck.
