Is it okay to wear an old glasses prescription?!

Question: Is it okay to wear an old glasses prescription?
I have a pair of glasses from 5 years back-my vision has changed by about 100. (my vision use to be -1.25/-.75 but now its -2.5/-1.75). Will it worsen my vision/have any negative effects if I wear these glasses for close range activities such as reading/studying? Thanks in advance

Being nearsighted, having an older, weaker pair for using for close work like you are doing is ideal.

There is nothing wrong with that and can't do any harm...and is bound to be more restful than using your full prescription.

Just about all nearsighted people should have a weaker pair laying around for things like that.

You have too much astigmatism to go without anything, so what you are doing is perfect.

Wearing an old perscription wont' hurt your eyes in anyway. It just won't help you to see. as much as teh new perscription would. However looking at this perscription which is quite mild its a negative perscription which means you are short sighted so you should have problems seeing things far away. That means that you shouldn't have real problem with close range activities unless your perscription was a lot worse. If you are having problems then the likelihood is that you have astigmatism on top of this.

If the old pair of glasses helps and you can't afford a new set then wear them for when they help. It won't have any negative impact but it may not help as much as a new perscription would.

In the short term, your old prescription glasses will not harm your eyesight. Your eyes will simply adapt to the change in focus when you put them on and then off. Most professionals agree that a ten day period is needed in order for your eyes to fully adjust to any new prescription (and even then it is not permanent). So as long as you are not using them all day for weeks on in, you are fine.

However, in the long term, any pattern will affect your eyes. This is the whole method behind correcting vision in the first place. If you are to wear your old glasses every day for a few hours after a year, your vision will change. This can get complicated and is why you should talk to an optometrist for details about the process.

Bottom line, go ahead and use them on an "as needed" basis so long as you do not use them too much. You could also try buying a cheap pair of reading glasses. Also, go ahead and talk to you opti -a quick call with a question is often free and very accurate.

DEFINITELY get a new prescription! You can save a lot of money if you already have frames (or use your old ones) and just get your prescription changed. There's a site that specializes in replacing your old lenses with your new prescription: www.replacementlensexpress.com. I think single vision is jsut $25. At that price, it's really not worth risking your health...
