They are all afraid of getting their butts sued off if something should happen , but they are being ridiculous.
Polycarbonate would be a terrible choice in a power that high. The optics of poly are terrible once you get over a +/- 3.00
They are under estimating the strength of a high index lens. A + 8.00 , even in a lens that small WOULD still be thick enough to withstand a garbage truck rolling over them as you say.
Regular lenses have an index of 1.50 , then there is Trivex, an excellent material, better than Poly, but it is only 1.53, so it is thicker than Poly....then there is 1.56 mid High index, which is good up to +/- 4.00 ( approx)...then poly at 1.58 , but is full of chromatic aberrations and poor optical clarity in powers over + 3.00 , then 1.6 High Index , great up to about 6 diopters...then in a power like + 8.00 he should be in a 1.67 Aspheric high index lens, which has flatter front curves than a non aspheric lens, reducing the magnification of the eyes to some extent.
It would still be thick enough to be very safe. It would never break.
Being as your Dr. prescribed High index, it looks like you will have to get them from him , even if they are more expensive , if no one else will do it.
It doesn't make sense to go with anything less than a high index with a power that high.
Good luck with that.
