can glasses correct other visual impairments?!

Question: Can glasses correct other visual impairments?
I know that glasses can correct near and far sighted vision, but what about "floaters" and(/or) astigmatism, double vision etc.

Please give examples if glasses can correct any of the above or others you know about.

Thanks in advance for responses.

Answers:

Astigmatism is a refractive error like myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness), so it's easily corrected with glasses.
Double vision, usually. We put something called a prism in to point the eyes' images the same direction. Some types of double vision are either too high in magnitude (making the glasses too thick, although we do have Fresnel prisms), or intermittent (when the amount of misalignment changes constantly, we can't correct for that), or if the images are rotated rather than just displaced horizontally and/or vertically.
Floaters are within the eye, so no.

Other conditions:
Nystagmus, we can sometimes use yoked prisms or minus lenses (or both) to reduce the size of the eye movements and thus improve vision.
Aniseikonia: when the images from each eye appear different sizes.
We use high levels of magnification sometimes for people with low vision (aka visual impairments) from diseases like age-related macular degeneration, not to improve their vision but to make it easier to perform certain tasks (like reading the newspaper) with the vision they still have left.
We also use tinted lenses for certain people who are light-sensitive or have contrast problems due to aniridia, rod/cone dystrophies, and other retinal problems.
Off the top of my head, that's all I can think of.

I'm an optometrist.

Astigmatism- definitely yes
Double Vision-probably yes
Floaters-definitely not

Eye problems or not, everyone should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam every few years. Most of us don't see an Ophthalmologist or optometrist until we have a real problem, which might have been prevented or minimized if we had regular exams.

Glasses can correct regular astigmatism, so yes. Glasses cannot correct floaters, they can correct some types of double vision with prisms.

Good luck

Eye care specialist.

Yes glasses can correct most of them but surgery is normally recommended over glasses.

If your worried about your eyesight go to a doctor or optometrist.
