Glaucoma Question plz?!

Question: Glaucoma Question plz?
Ok well in my mom's side most of my uncles have lost their eyesight due to glaucoma (so did my mom), as far as i can tell everyone from my dad's side is healthy. am i at a high risk of developing glaucoma? also i am getting an eye exam in 2 weeks, if glaucoma was to be detected (i am 16 years old, my last eye exam was 2 years ago.) Can glaucoma be stopped? or if i had to get treatment how long would it take before i completely lost my eyesight?

Answers:

First off, don't be nervous.

Yes, you are at a higher risk for glaucoma because of your family history. However, don't get too nervous about it. Glaucoma usually begins in middle to late adulthood. Also, it is treatable, and when diagnosed in the early stages, normal vision can be restored.

Most people go to an optometrist about once a year. My suggestion to you would be to, if your eye care insurance will cover it, go to an ophthalmologist (they spend more time in school than an optometrist and get a M.D. degree rather than an O.D. degree) twice a year. Glaucoma is just the improper drainage of vitreous fluid, which in turn builds up pressure in the eye, leading to optic nerve damage. Your eye doctor will test the pressure in your eyes when you go, either using a blue light that touches your eye (your doctor will numb it first) or by using a puff of air. Either way, your doctor will check. Chances are, you're fine. Try not to worry about it. As long as you see an eye doctor routinely, you'll be okay.

Your chances are probably higher than someone who didn't have glaucoma in the family history.

Get tested. Then follow the doctor's advice. Whether it can be stopped depends on the exact form the glaucoma takes. Yes, it can be treated.
