Does it take years and years to damage your eyesight?!

Question: Does it take years and years to damage your eyesight?
i was shocked by young people getting glasses, like at four years old!!!!
i thought ruining your eyes took like ten years!!!!
could weariing glasses you dont need and watching tv close really damage vision quicker if you did stuff like that constantly?
thank you- just curious

Answers:

The need for glasses is mostly genetically determined. A small percentage of preschoolers need glasses and almost always born that way.

Watching TV, computers, reading etc will not make you need glasses and people who need glasses do not have damaged eyesight -- they see normally with the glasses. People with damaged sight cannot see clearly even with glasses.

It can take years of smoking or years of UV light exposure to damage eyes.

I'm an optometrist

Yes, it can take years to damage your eyes, but you could also damage them immediately by doing something dumb like staring into the sun too long. I doubt that watching TV too close will do too much of any type of damage except maybe give you a headache. And wearing glasses you don't need would probably do the same thing. Perhaps you should call your eye doctor and ask him or her? Asking advice of people in this forum is fun, but serious medical questions should be handled by a serious medical professional.

I'd add to Footprints answer that I think you see more people wearing glasses these days for 2 reasons.

1. Glasses are easier to wear so people who need them actually wear them rather than resorting to them when they are desperate.
2. If you work on computers/look at modern TV's you notice more if your eyesight isnt' perfect so you are more liable to go and get your eyes tested. Also eye tests in school are better - they missed the fact I couldn't even see lamposts for years as the nurse felt that if I couldnt' read the chart it meant I was illiterate.
