I am pretty sure i am short sighted, but i cannot tell my mum, what should i do?!

Question: I am pretty sure i am short sighted, but i cannot tell my mum, what should i do?
Ok, basically ever since a couple of years ago, things at a distance have been getting blurry, and as the months go on it gets worse, but not much. My friend's glasses are 0.4 i believe and when i put these on everything is fine. So it isn't really serious, but i do play a lot of video games and i spend a lot of time on the PC, and if i tell my mum i need glasses, she will most likely take these things away from me which i really don't want. So i was wondering, how old do you have to be to get an eye test on you're own and buy a prescription. Sorry about the title not making sense, but i ran out of characters :/ Thanks :) And by the way I am 15.

Okay so you would rather play your computer games for a couple of years and go blind than get your eyes checked and be able to play computer games all your life.

The computer won't be helping but it is unlikely to be the cause. Be a little bit grown up tell your Mum and get your eyes tested.

Go to an optician. When you turn 17 you can't drive if you can't read the number plates.

Get a cheap pair of specs (specsavers or something) keep them for 6 months, dont wear them/dont tell your mum - then you can qualify for contact lenses - you can see and you dont need your mum to know!

Might be expensive - might want a part time job to pay for them.

If you really don't want your mum to know, even though I think she should, go to a Pound Shop, and try on all the glasses there. Pick the best ones, theyre only £1, so you should be able to afford that.
Like the other guy says, it's not your fault, it's in your genes, so if it's anybody's fault, it's your parents.

You're near-sighted or farsighted. Sounds like you're nearsighted. See if they offer free vision test at school or a local clinic or optometrist. Near-sightedness has nothing to do with playing computer games. I needed glasses by age 13 and we had no computer games then ;-)

Research this online, and then talk to your mom. If you need glasses, you need glasses. If you can't pay for them yourself, you're going to have to talk to her. Isn't good for school, if you can't see the board.

look friend, i play games on my pc too, im addicted too, but tell me one thing. are these games worth more than your health. specially your eyes, without them there would be no games and anything if you could not see anything. i suggest you to play in limit, use precautions like buy led monitor or an anti glare screen. 0.4 is not too much. you can recover it if you want to. take good medical help.
right, take care of yourself.
good luck.

Turn down the brightness on your monitor to 0. Then start playing more Nintendo DS and Xbox 360 instead of computer. Wear sunglasses and your eyes will heal i think.

well tell her, it's not your fault you're short sighted it's your genes.

pretend you got some bad chemical in your eyes and now they're ******.

First of all, using the computer and playing video games didn't mess up your vision. Look at some old school year books, old family photos, etc you will see people wearing glasses long before computers and video games were invented!

If you want to blame this on something, how about your parents; it was their "bum genes" that that led to your nearsightedness.

If you are afraid to directly tell your parents, maybe get the school nurse to send a note saying that during a routine exam, it was found that your vision was not up to par...

If your parents freak, just let them know, if you can't see, you will flunk out of school and spend the rest of your life rummaging through dumpsters & sitting outside shopping malls holding a cardboard sign "will work for food".

You can get an eyetest & glasses pretty cheap a Walmarts

Added: I just noticed you were in England, I don't know if they Have Walmarts there, If you are really dirt-poor, they have a NHS that might be able to help out.

It is extremely unfortunate that this myth about video games damaging your eyes is so common. This means that you end up being effectively punished and blamed for something which is not your fault. There is no evidence that this sort of thing damages your eyes. Its down to the shape of your eyeball and starts a puberty. I don't believe you can get a perscription without an adult - even if you could glasses are not that cheap and you will need help from your parents. Somehow you have to tell your Mum adn at the same time convince her that PC's and video games are not the problem. You will see lots of answers from opticians on this saying this is not the problem - would pulling a selection of these up convince her and also show her that you can do useful things on your PC like get advice? Could you ask the optician to speak to her about the causes of short sightedness?

It sounds like you don't have very bad eyesight but its difficult to assess on your own and it doesnt' help with school work and other things to have poor eyesight.

You are very welcome to wear eyeglasses. The reason why you have to wear glasses and no-one else is down to GENETICS. Any delay in wearing glasses will simply add to the increasing trouble you already have with seeing properly. Right now you have bad eyes but choose to wear glasses and you will be to acquire clear vision with no side-effects.

If your prescription is out of date feel free to visit our clinic. One of my asssitants will gladly establish your current prescription. We can also show you around place and witness our state-of-the-art selection of "super glasses".

Please note, spending too much time staring at the TV or a video game has never been proven to cause bad eyesight. And spending time indoors all day has never been linked to poor vision. These are all lies made by misinformed non-professionals. Dont be fooled into thinking anything otherwise, young man.

Being the well cared for client that you are, i would like to use this opportunity to mention the many examples of websites that are currently spreading FALSE and misleading information across the internet. These sites are noticeable from their suggetions of "eye exercises" and "natural methods" to achieve "eyesight improvement". The whole idea they are suggesting is completely 100% untrue. These sites only exist so to trick you into lowering your guard and for you to part with your cash in exchange an "opportunity" to improve your natural vision.

Let me put it this way. If one person was proven to improve their vision by these methods then why does EVERYONE still wear glasses?
So if you do happen to get advice that conflicts with that given by your trusted eye doctor then please immediately inform your local authorities of the scam.
