You more than likely have bumped your eye,
(Could have even happened while you were asleep),
or possibly got a microscopic shred of something inside of it..
You have a broken blood vessel.
Try your very best to not touch it, or rub it.

Its good news it doesn't itch or otherwise bother you, since that would result in you rubbing your eye, without even realizing you are doing it.

If you ever sneeze, but block the sneeze by holding your nose..
if you have been in much higher altitudes, recently..
if you have flown, recently,
or you are prone to having higher than "normal" blood pressure..
if you have been choked,
lost consciousness,
have been in a submarine..
been swimming underwater, with or without eye goggles,
been snorkeling,
scuba-diving..
even held your breath for a really long time,
if you were sitting or standing and had your head lower than your heart..
stood on your head for a long time..
the above situations could all burst blood vessels in your eyes
but it would more than likely be in BOTH eyes,
not just one.

If someone has strangled you, or choked you to the point of becoming almost unconscious,
then you have much bigger problems than the discoloration in that eye, so if THAT is the case, please PLEASE amend your Question, so the Contributors at Y! Answers.com can rally the Troops and come rescue you.

You have injured the eye, and it doesn't really matter HOW or WHEN you did it.
It could have been a slight, little bump that didn't feel like a full-blown injury at the time,
but has resulted in this odd, over-all reddening.

Have you ever pinched your finger so hard that it bleeds INSIDE, under the skin?
Since you haven't punctured or lacerated the skin, it doesn't bleed out. It just stays there, until the body absorbs it.
If its a large pinched area, this can be remedied sometimes by puncturing the area,
so it bleeds out, and doesn't stay under the surface.
Well, its kind of like that, in a way.
Don't be alarmed.
And DO NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, try to puncture the eye, so it will bleed out!
I just was using that as an example.

Sounds like what you have is a tiny, broken blood vessel.

You could try applying sterile, cotton pads or sterile cotton balls, saturated in Pure saline Solution,
and chilled in the refrigerator.
Place them on the eye and hold there, like a compress, for a while.
If you applied hot/warm compresses, it would only result in more redness.

The blood will be absorbed and will go away after a week or so.
You may still see remains of the redness even after that.
If it doesn't dissipate in a week,
=
show signs of going away,
appears to encompass the entire eye,
spreads to the other eye,
if you start to have very sever headaches and feel pressure behind the eye..
SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION, immediately.

Another thing to watch for is your blood pressure/stress level. It doesn't sound as if you are in your 50s, have two mortgages, are overly consumed with worry over utility bills, and how to pay for your Kid's college educations..
but none the less, even KIDS can have high blood pressure.

If you have had more stress in your Life, lately,
have had some very upsetting or traumatizing news, recently..
if you have had anxiety re: School, or Friends, or Family stuff..
these things can all doing their part to make you Stressed.
=
Higher Blood pressure.
=
Possible cause for alarm, and seeing a Physician.
