How long can you be on the computer before it starts to damage your eyes?!

Question: How long can you be on the computer before it starts to damage your eyes?
I was just wondering if 30 minutes on the computer can damage your eyes. What if you get on the computer 30 minutes every day?

30 mins a day isn't alot but if your face is on top of the monitor then you could damage your eyes

If computers could damage your eyes then computer professionals would be in serious trouble. Most of us work 8 hours minimimum 5 days a week on screens and most days its more and can be up to 72 hours straight. We would all be blind of as little as 30 minutes damaged your eyes and most of the worlds services would start to collapse as teh people who support them went blind. Computers do strain your eyes - see answers for loads of advice on minimizign eye strain but they dont' damage them.

Well so far I've been a constant no-lifer and spend my days by the computer, often 5-8 hours each day for 6 years now, and I'm the only one in my family who doesn't need glasses.

I'd say there's probably no limit as to how long you can sit by the computer without damaging your eyes. :)

Explain to me what it is about a computer monitor that can damage your eyes? Eyes do what they do, with monitors and everything else. There's no evil, eye-damaging radiation coming from the monitor or anything.

No amount of computer time damages your eyes. That's a myth.
If you type a lot you'll get carpal tunnel before damaging your eyes :) No worries
