Glasses and contacts do not make eyesight better. They're just a visual aid like the hearing aid for the hard of hearing. You'll therefore need to wear glasses/contacts forever. The only two alternatives are surgery (which has its risks) or a long period of eye exercises plus the use of undercorrections. I'm having excellent results with exercises but it takes great patience and that means it's not for everyone.

Peter,

Sorry to say but generally glasses/contacts will NOT resolve your eye-sight problems. If you've been wearing visual correction since 10yrs old, then it's likely that your Rx is moderate to high. So it's more likely that you will need Visual Correction for the rest of your life.

The eye's Rx does change slightly as you get older, usually if you're short-sighted, your Rx will reduce a little, but rarely to the extent that you won't need glasses.

And if you're long-sighted, or have astigmatism, it usually just gets worse with age.

Sorry to say.

Now there is Laser Surgery... and hopefully in the near future, variable-controllable INTRA-OCULAR LENS replacement surgery that will correct ALL refractive error problems.
