Can I switch from glasses to contacts without going to the eye doctor?!

Question: Can I switch from glasses to contacts without going to the eye doctor?
I really want to switch to contacts, but since insurance only pays for the eye doctor once a year I have quite a few months to wait. I was just wondering if there was a way to switch to contacts without having to pay a lot of money and go to the eye doctor.
No, I've never worn contacts before.

If the optician has a contact lens prescription on file all you need to do is ask for it, you might have to pay a fee for the tutorial and lens fitting though. Otherwise you'll have to wait until your insurance can pay for the consultation

If you have never worn contacts before, you do not have a contact lens prescription. Without a contact lens prescription, you cannot order contacts. Whether you order online, or at a doctor's office, they will ask for your contact lens prescription. Also, since you have not worn contacts before you will need to be fit and taught how to properly wear and care for contacts. You may be able to go back to your doctor and see if they will just do a contact lens fitting exam for you. They may just charge for the fitting instead of the whole exam, but if it has been more than a month or so since your exam, the doctor may want you to receive a complete exam in order to get contacts.

you probably can but i consider that you check with a doctor because my friend had needed glasses and when he said he wanted to wear contacts the doctor said he had to wait a year before he switches or it will hurt his vision

If you've never worn contacts before, you really need your eye doctor to prescribe the lenses for you first. If they aren't fitted properly they might damage your eye.

Yes you can, as long as you know your vision number :)

I think in the US the law requires a specific prescription for contacts. In some other countries this is not the case.
