The pupil is basically a hole in the eye that allows the light to come in.
The iris (colored part of your eye) around it allows it to contract (become smaller) to let in less light when it's bright out, and dilate (become bigger) in the dark to let more light in.
If the pupil didn't change sizes, either light would be really painful as it would overwhelm the eye (if our pupils just stayed big all the time) or we would hardly be able to see in the dark at all (if our pupils stayed normal or small all the time). And if we had no pupils at all, well, we'd be blind!
