I have multiple sclerosis. Approximately 40% of us who have MS will have a vision problem over our life time. The rest will never have a problem. And those of us who do experience a problem get what is called optic neuritis. This means that the immune system is attacking the optic nerve. If a subsequent MRI indicates that there is an inflammation, the neurologist may or may not prescribe a steroid infusion, depending upon any number of other factors. A steroid infusion may stop the attack but that is not always the case. And there is a limit to the number of steroid infusions a patient can have unless they are willing to ravage their adrenal system and wind up at the undertakers.

I had optic neuritis. I went blind in my left eye, My vision returned to near normal over a period of weeks The residual damage is not correctable. Optic neuritis typically lasts for six weeks and resolves itself. No eye doctor can treat it or reverse the damage.

So the answer to your question, a person who has MS can go to a ophthalmologist or an optometrist based on their personal preference.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society at http://www.nmss.org

Not everyone with MS will have vision affected. If the vision is affected, it is a condition called optic neuritis and the vision will usually return to normal or near normal after a few months. If the vision becomes bad, the person's family doctor will refer them to an ophthalmologist for confirmation of the diagnosis.

For routine checkups, the person should see either an optometrist or ophthalmologist every year or two.

Ask your primary care doctor to refer you to an Ophthalmologist, of course after seeing a neurologist!
