Where do you go if your eyes are red/pink?!

You will need to see an optometrist. They are an eye doctor that is trained to give prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses and also trained to treat a variety of ocular diseases, including red eyes!

You do NOT need to see an optician. They are not doctors and usually only deal with helping patients select glasses and ordering them.

You do NOT need to directly see an ophthalmologist. Most ophthalmologists only see patients that are referred to them for serious reasons and most honestly don't want to be bothered with a red eye off the street, because there is a shortage of ophthalmologists right now and they are very busy.

I just thought I would clarify the difference between those three O words, as many people get them confused (and rightly so).

You can look in the phonebook for an Optometrist, or you can do a Yahoo search online. Or ask your friends which optometrist is closest to you.

Do NOT got to the ER. Usually, there is not an optometrist or ophthalmologist on-call and general medical doctors don't learn enough about the eyes specifically to properly treat a red eye (in most cases). And quite honestly, all the ER docs that I know would much rather have a gun shot wound walk through their door than a red eye! Just because they feel much more qualified and trained to deal with a wound, than they do to deal with a complicated red eye.
