I have blurry, unfocused vision when I'm tired and reading. Why? Help!?!

Question: I have blurry, unfocused vision when I'm tired and reading. Why? Help!?
Please help if you know what I'm talking about.

Some Background Info:
My eyesight is horrible - my left eye is at -7.25 and my right eye is at -8.75. The reason the right one was worse is because it was damaged when I was young, and the muscles are not strong enough to hold the actual eyeball in place - what happens is, without correction (without glasses) it sporadically crosses AWAY from my nose and I get double-vision. It used to be that this only happened without the glasses and when the glasses were on it never happened. If I wanted to freak someone out I would have to force my eye to do it, which I never did, almost. This is not the problem, though.

The Problem:
This crossing over stopped about 5 years ago. It never happened with contacts. Reading for long hours in the night, when I'm tired, used to be the norm for me (for fun) and now I'm required to do it in university. Now, usually when I'm tired, THE EYE CROSSES OVER, no matter what, contacts or glasses or not. I have to force it back the same way people have to uncross their eyes, repeatedly. It doesnt matter what I'm doing either, but I notice it more when I'm reading, and tired, I just got new lenses a while ago, and theyre correct, so that's not the problem. I don't know why this happens, but it's only when I'm tired and I can never read for a long period of time anymore.. Help!

Answers:

It sounds to me like this is a muscle thing and therefore when you aer tired your muscles are more tired as well. Bit like walking too far - at some point your muscles are tired but you can force them if you really push it you will find your legs start to collapse under you. Speaking to the optician would be a good idea, but you could also try resting your eyes periodically during the day for 1/2 hour to give your muscles a break. I find resting with an eye bag over my eyes such as is used for yoga helps. The bag seems to make it easier for my eye muscles to relax. I do tend to have aproblem with this when my eyes are tired, although I dont' know if its for the same reason as you. I have a prism in my glasses to help but not in my contacts. However I'm using my contacts outside and I think this is less of a strain on the eyes. The secret I've found is short breaks on a frequent basis and trying to get one day off a week when you use your near vision as little as possible.

See an ophthalmologist, asap.

It sounds like you had Strabismus as a young child and the surgery does not always entirely cure your crossed eye(s). You seem to have some muscle weakness, which gets worse when you read for long period of time and probably also happens with excess computer usage or other close work.

Make an appointment with your ophthalmologist or eye specialist to get your eyes checked when you can. Strabismus often requires additional surgery when you reach adulthood. In the mean time try to look away from your books for a few seconds every hour or better yet, try to rest your eye for 10 or 15 minutes every hours or so.
