Do I need high index for my prescription?!

Question: Do I need high index for my prescription?
I have a sphere of -3.75 for DV and RE and a sphere of -4.00 of DV and LE. The doctor has put lines across cylinder and axis and both the VA are 6/6.

The IPD has 68 MM and at the end the doctor has written: pl do vertex correction for C2.

I have noticed that the edges of my glasses look really thick and my eyes look small and beady when I wear them. My lens also look curved and my face kinda looks distorted because you can the see the sides of my head through the frames.

So I was wondering if I use 1.74 high index for my lens, will it reduce the thickness and make my eyes look less small? Is my myopia moderate or high?

Answers:

That power is moderate.

I would suggest the 1.67 maximum for that power.

A 1.74 is overkill with no advantage. The 1.74 should be used in powers over - 8.00

Too high an index in a lower power like you have can cause some bad distortions in the lenses.

At that power, the 1.74 wouldn't be any thinner anyway than a 1.67

Be sure to specify you want an aspheric lens. Being aspheric will minimize the " beady eye " effect to some extent, although it will always do it because of the power of the lens, not the thickness.

The 1.67 Aspheric, with a good anti-reflection coating and a frame no bigger than necessary should come out pretty good.

The higher the index, the thinner (and lighter) the lens will be. Unfortunately, that "small and beady" look is due to the sphere, not the IR, so that won't change much. But the lens will look less curved also. I think you'll be happier with higher IR lenses (and that's what matters, as long as the prescription is correct), isn't it?

I use high index and find it really good , well worth the money in terms of weight and thickness but my perscription is worse than yours. As my myopia is considered moderate I think yours must be as well.
