It would depend on the severity of tear and the person themselves how fast a tear would develop into a detachment, but know that it generally will. If your retina detaches the earlier you get treatment (surgery) the more likely it can be reattached and the more likely you are to retain your vision. If you wait too long, (which could be a week or weeks) you will go blind. Retinal tears are usually controlled or fixed with laser or cryotherapy (freezing) treatment/surgery, In either case, see an ophthalmologist (retinal specialist) immediately if you want to retain your vision.

I looked on the internet and could not determine how soon before detachment, however, there is a fix for retinal tears (I had this done). I am going to paste a web page below that may have some help. I don't think the link works but the address is www.apagrafix.com

It doesn't always progress in a uniform fashion.
Detachment doesn't necessarily cause blindness either, it depends on the cause and how quickly treatment is undertaken.
Best advice is to remain under the care of a qualified and experienced specialist.
