don't worry you don't have a retinal tear/detachment. its perfectly normal to see a flash every now and then.
if you had a retinal tear/detachment you would see flashes constrantly. they wouldn't just be for a second and only happen sometimes. also you'd have a floater that doesn't go away and gets worse and worse and becomes bigger and invades your vision until you go blind in that eye and it doesn't take too long for all of this to come about (a matter of days or weeks). you can even see the floater when you close your eyes.
you're fine.
i'm 24 and i've had 4 retinal detachments (twice in each eye).
It's the retinal tear that creates the "flashes of light". Retinal detachment creates black or blank areas in a person's field of vision. How long the flashes last varies from person to person. Some people experience the flashes for 20-30 minutes or more. If the person is experiencing the symptoms then the person should see their Ophthalmologist immediately to avoid becoming blind permanently.
