I have so many problems!?!

Question: I have so many problems!?
Hello guys, i want to tell you about my situation. I am asian and i live in UK! I came here about two years ago and i am going to be 14 this year. When i first came here, my english was really really bad but it is improved. My accent is freaking me out because everytime i read aloud, everyone laughs because of my accent. I know that i can improve it but it is hard. I hate reading aloud and i don't have any friends! i am not confident person.

Secondly, my eyesight! my eyesight is really bad, it is -5 and -5.25. i can't see without my glasses and i can't shower without them! i wear contact lenses sometimes. it is like my life is pointless, i have nothing to desire because i am ugly, self-conscious person!

Your vocabulary and sentence structure is much better than I've seen from most Questioners and Answerers on Yahoo Answers. Your english has obviously improved tremendously and you should be very proud of that. Practice will take care of your accent and I am pretty sure that there are as many people with accents in the UK as in the USA. I hardly hear english at all in my area. Your eyesight is mediocre but not terrible. Wearing glasses is much better than being blind. I am sure you are not ugly, nor is your life pointless. You seem like a bright young man, but 14 is a tough time for all kids. The best way to stop the other kids from laughing at you, is just to say something like, "whoops, guess I'm having a tough time with that word" and laugh right along with them. I'm sure if these kids see it doesn't bother you, they will stop and even want to start being friends because they will think you have a really good sense of humor. I must say that I am quite surprised that your teacher has not stepped in and reprimanded your classmates for such rude and inconsiderate behavior.

I know you will find this hard to believe, but your whole life will change in a few years and you will find it hard to believe you ever felt this way. You have so many wonderful things to look forward to, college or university, traveling, your first job, your first girlfriend, your first wife, your first child. Just kidding about the first wife. Try to develop a sense of humor about the bad things and life will be much better for you.

Where exactly are you reading aloud? If this is in school then the teacher should not let people laugh at you - its not acceptable. As for your accent , loads of people for whom English is a first language have accents of various sorts. It is one of the things that people laugh at if an accent is different from there own. You certainly write fluent English - a lot better than some questions on here. You have done really well to do this at only 14 - loads of people who have lived here all their lives don't do as well. With your accent its one of the hardest things with a second language. You don't say if its just your accent or that people don't understand what you are saying. In my experience with my colleagues who work in India there are 2 problems with their spoken English. The first is where they put the emphasis in the word which varies from language to language and teh second is that they actually speak English too fast . Its fine to work on your accent but please give yourself credit for learning a second language and writing in it so well. I can't really help you with friends but this does sound a bit to me like you are being bullied which is not acceptable and you should look to your schools bullying policy or possibly a helpline to give you some advice.

Now your eyesight - this is considered moderately bad not severe. Its better than mine and yes you are right it can be tricky to find your way round the shower although I find putting everything in place before I start to shower and keeping it the same every time helps. It doesn't help if the entire bathroom is one colour particularly white. You say you wear contacts sometimes - why only sometimes? do you have problems wearing them or do they not do a lot for you? I did find that wearing contacts constantly helped my confidence but this may not be true for everyone. If you haven't found new friends then your confidence is bound to be low. This is probalby why you are describing yourself as ugly. I'm sure you're not ugly but even if you were does this mean that there is nothing you can enjoy in life? Are there some groups outside school you could join which would give you some new interests and help you meet new people who were more sympathetic? I knwo this is tricky when you lack confidence. I don't know if you like sports but there are lots of those. Or you could look and see if there is some volunteer work which might interest you - some groups look for young people who can speak more than one language to help with refugees.

I wish you good luck , can't be easy being in a different country and having to make friends. Also the UK at this time of year is particularly miserable as we have so few hours of daylight and the weather is awful. This tends to make everyone a bit miserable anyway.
