It depends on whether the conjunctivitis (pink eye) is viral, bacterial or allergic, but most forms clear within 2-5 days, depending on whether or not you have received medical treatment. If it lasts more than 5 or 6 days, you might have particularly virulent form of the infection and should go back to the eye doctor immediately.

If you have pink eye or even think that you do, wash your hands thoroughly and often and keep your towels, washcloths and soap separate from those you live with. Also be careful that you do not touch the infected eye because you can spread the virus to your healthy eye. Pink eye is often highly contagious for as long as two weeks after symptoms start. Although conjunctivitis can clear on its own it is advisable to get it checked out by a doctor who will prescribe the proper eye drops to help the conjunctivitis resolve faster. If using eye drops, do not allow the tip of the bottle to touch your eye. Use a tissue to wipe the overflow from the drops and make sure to discard it where no one else can touch it.
