Don't worry, although his pressure is a bit unusual that doesn't mean anything. He just has to go to the doctor regularly and everything will be fine. Today there are many ways to treat this situation, and it's usually very easy to avoid serious problems like glaucoma. He won't get blind as long as he follows what the doctor will tell him.

You father's eye pressures (intraocular pressure or IOP) are at a level above what we like to see. However, before you become alarmed, the next step is to measure his IOP on different days and at different times. This provides valuable information on the range of pressures that your Dad is experiencing and will help to determine the course of treatment.

Generally, we like to see IOP between 12-20 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). However, this is a statistical measure. The true definition of a normal IOP is one that does not cause damage to YOUR optic nerve. In some cases, an IOP of 17 is too high. In other cases, 22 does not cause damage to the optic nerve, particularly if it is transient.

The first question that you should ask your father's ophthalmologist is if the optic nerve in either eye shows evidence of damage. This can be determined by the ophthalmologist visually or by using a test called optical coherence tomography.

Fortunately, glaucoma is a treatable disease. The outcomes usually are good if the patient adheres to their prescribed treatment regimen.
