Does not wearing your glasses affect your eyes?!

Question: Does not wearing your glasses affect your eyes?
One of my friends stated that it's harmful to my eyes and vision to not wear my glasses. I wear my glasses, but not as much as she. She wears them all day. I use them when I'm in class and there are notes because I can't see far away that well. Is she right? If she is, what should I do to reverse this?

What you do is right. Use glasses when you need to, otherwise don't use them. Glasses are not a therapy, they're just a visual aid. If you use them when you don't need them (for example when you're reading or writing), your eyesoght will get worse more quickly.

Your friend's case is irrelevant.

If your optician tells you to wear them all the time, wear them all the time. If he says "just for reading" then do that.

Basically if you follow the advice of your optician you can't go wrong. If you don't you will cause yourself eye strain and become more dependent in the future.

If you don't like to wear them, ask your optician about contact lenses.

I'm a dispensing optician.

All scientific studies show that wearing/not wearing your glasses makes no difference to your eyesight. The cause of this as you grow is that your eyeball is the wrong shape and this shows as you grow and your eyesight can get worse. People then link the original wearing of glasses with teh fact their eyesight has got worse. Also once you get used to corrected vision you notice more that you can't see properly without glasses , it becomes more irritating and you wear them more. In a sense you are becoming more dependent on glasses but its nto that your eyesight is worse but because you understand how bad it is. Unfortunately you can't reverse this problem short of surgery and your perscription may change as you grow. Contacts are really fantastic though and it sounds like your glasses dont' bother you so wear them when you need to.

When I was young I needed glasses to see close up. (to read etc)
I wore my glasses, but took up crocheting to get my eyes used to close up work.
When I went back to the eye doc, he said I was far sighted and asked me if I had been wearing my glasses. I told him no and that I took up crocheting. He told me to stop and start training my eyes by looking at things far away. It worked because I went back the following year and I did not need glasses at all.

My sister needed glasses to see far away and she ended up wearing them all the time instead of just when she was looking at the black board or seeing far away.
When she went back to the eye doc, she needed to wear her glasses all the time and by the time she was 30 had bifocals.

So i would say yes to your question.

It's myth that glasses make your vision better. Ask what your doctor thinks. They will say the.same. also wearing glasses is not proven to prevent deterioration of eyesight. Your doctor will confirm this.

What is dangerous to eyesight is forcing excessive strain on it. Its also wrong to not allow your eyes sufficient time to rest (for them to recover.)

By the way what blessed said was a good answer (based on real life) however I think she meant to say NO, using natural eyesight is not dangerous. She said her sister used glasses all the time and now has poor vision.

Eyeglasses only correct your vision when you wear them. Eyeglasses will not make your uncorrected vision better or worse. I typically wear mine when I need to for clear distance vision while driving or watching TV. The choice when to wear eyeglasses is really up to you and you comfort level with blur.

Nah don't think so but wearing someone elses glasses or wrong prescription glasses will

my doctor says wearing glasses all the time does not affect eye or help
