Can eye liner cause eye infections?!

Question: Can eye liner cause eye infections?
I was wanting to know how to use eye liner for deep set eyes last night but I think I went overboard. I am also a contact lens wearer so I washed my hands and took them out and took the eyeliner off with cold cream. Weird thing is that I woke up today and about a half hour later, my eyes were really dry; redness around the top part along with a scratchy and itchy feeling. I then called my mom and she told me to use thera tears (her ophthalmologist recommends them since she had a bad eye infection 2 years ago and also had to get cataract surgery). They worked though I could tell my left eye is still a little scratchy but better than before. But anyway....can eye liner cause infections? I sure hope this doesn't sound like one because I hate going to the doctor or using antibiotics, but then again I wouldn't want to risk my eyesight either. Help?

Answers:

Eye liner can cause an infection if the product is contaminated with bacteria.

The other issue could be allergies. You may be having an allergic reaction to the cold cream or the eye liner.

If you stop using the eyeliner and only use the cold cream, and the itching continues it could be that the cold cream is either contaminated with bacteria or it is causing an allergic reaction.

Lastly, contact lenses sometimes do scratch the eye. That typically causes a scratchy feeling.

IMO, a trip to an eye doctor just to be sure what exactly is causing the problem is a wise idea because if you have a bacterial infection you may need antibiotics. If the contacts are scratching the surface of the eye, you need to know that, too.

If the scratchy and itchiness is only on the skin of the lid and there is no swelling or discharge, it is possible that you are dealing with an allergic skin reaction to something you used on the eye lid.

Still, it's better to have a doctor take an in-person look.
