Questions about eyes...?!

Question: Questions about eyes...?
We are supposed to come up with ten questions to ask an eye doctor. He's coming in to answer these questions next friday, but they are due tomorrow. I have a few ideas already, but here's the kicker: the classic questions such as "how long did you have to go to school?" "What do you like/dislike about your job?" "What made you want to do this with your life?" are out. We have to ask questions about vision/eyes/etc.

Also, our teacher was telling us that this is one of his favorite things to do, and that he likes to be challenged. She wants us to ask hard questions... any ideas?

Answers:

Nah, you want to stump this guy, right? Those are easy questions for any eye doctor to answer.

Ask him to describe Scheerer's phenomenon and what causes it. Its when you look at a blue screen or up at the sky and you see little tiny dots squiggling around. The tiny dots are caused by white blood cells travelling through the blood vessels in the back of your eye. Normally your eye adjusts to the red blood vessels being there, but the white blood cells disrupt this and you actually can see them. He probably won't know what it is.

Also, ask him why prisms work. Why does it split light up into red, blue and green, etc. Nobody knows the answer to this question, we just know that smaller wavelengths of light are bent more by prisms, but we don't actually know why.

Ask him what protein is affected in Marfan's disease (a genetic disorder that causes dislocation of the lens of the eye - among other things). The answer is "fibrillin" - any medical student could answer this question, but after doctors are out in practice for a while, they forget stuff like that because they aren't asked except for on tests.

Ask him how far away a light would have to be from a 3 diopter lens for all of the light rays to come out the other side perfectly parallel. The answer is 33.3 cm. (its just 1/diopters which gives you the answer in meters, so you have to convert to cm). He'll probably know the answer to this one, but it'll make you look smart that you knew how to answer it.

Ask him to describe the vision of someone who has retinitus pigmentosa (It is a real eye disease - my husband has it - it causes night blindness and loss of peripherial vision or tunnel vision) He'll be impressed that you've heard of this!

Or you could ask about the causes of macular degeneration (a woman at my church has this and it causes blindness)

Or you could ask about the link between diabetes and blindness.

I don't know what grade you are in - but I think these questions should be challenging - have fun!
