Question: Were these just dry eyes or an irritation?
Two nights ago, I was messing around with new make eyeliner and put a moderate amount of it on. I am also a contact lens wearer and even washed my hands like I always do before I took them out, then I removed the eye makeup. Well the next morning I could see that my eyes were red and got really dry/sensitive near light. I put some thera tears in and they worked and though my eyes are getting better, it's a slow process. But what could this have been? Allergies, or an irritation? I wouldn't think it was an infection because I don't think infections can heal on their own. Advice?

Could be an allergy since that's not an eyeliner you normally use. Infections can and do heal on their own most of the time. If the infection is severe you may need antibiotics. No way to say for sure without an eye exam, but if your eyes are getting better, you should be ok.
