scratch resisting coating on glasses?!

Question: Scratch resisting coating on glasses?
My optician offered some extras when I enquired about new glasses. One option was adding scratch resisting coating , for extra price of course.
Glasses do scratch after a while so considering it. Anyone have any knowledge of this process and if its actually any good...or just another gimmick to get more money out of the customers pocket?

Here's how my (very honest) eye doctor explained it to me.

My insurance pays for me to get new glasses every two years. The scratch coating is good for one year and available for an extra $35. Just before that year is up, I go in and get new lenses and then I have brand new ones until the next year is up to get new ones again.
Like I said, he's a very honest man. Besides that, it really is worth the money because my glasses go through hell. I leave them all kinds of dumb places.

A plastic lens without an anti scratch coat is like a banana without it's peel...very soft , and vulnerable to damage.

Good anti scratch coatings are guaranteed for 2 years by the lens manufacturers.

For Kali....if you get anti glare, then you have anti scratch also...anti glare comes with anti scratch...it has to or it can't be applied.

" or just another gimmick to get more money out of the customers pocket? "

Why are people so darn cynical about things they don't have any knowledge of.

My mom got the scratch resistant coating once - something happened so that she did get a bit of a scratch on one lens and then it started peeling and was awful - she ended up getting new lenses - I just get the anti glare and like that.

there are different quality levels of lens material. i,ve gotten scratch resistant coatings for about 20 years. they work extremely well. i also get the anti glare coatings.
