I'm not from the US. In the UK I just walk in a place and arrange an appointment. While there I ask if its ok to just have the eyetest and not have glasses. They've always said that's fine. However they always ignore this when I actually have the eyetest. The optometrist person seem too stupid to understand that I had arranged to pay for an eyetest and not take glasses. It just looks a waste of time to explain because the people there in seem a bit clueless in general.

As for your glasses, make sure you check into the places where you are thinking about purchasing them from. Especially with glasses, you get what you pay for. There are so many different manufacturers of lenses and frames. Some are great and some are complete junk. Ask your optician any questions you may have to make sure you are getting the best solution for you.

Look in your yellow pages, there must be dozens and dozens of them in Manhattan.

You don't have to buy your glasses where you get your eye exam either. You can take your prescription and shop around at any optical stores you want.
