Optic Neuritis does not appear to be caused by eye trauma or chemical pollutants. Optic neuritis usually develops due to an autoimmune disorder, that may be triggered by a viral infection. Some autoimmune disorders that trigger Optic Neuritis include Syphilis, Lyme disease, herpes zoster, Lupus, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Vasculitis and Diabetes. Certain drugs can also trigger this disease.

As you are aware, in some people, signs and symptoms of optic neuritis may be an indication or precursor of multiple sclerosis. I assume you have had blood tests to rule out any other underlying disease. If you have another occurrence of optical neuritis with no underlying disease, perhaps you should see and another ophthalmologist for an other opinion. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
