How do you prevent further eyesight loss?!

Question: How do you prevent further eyesight loss?
I'm nearsighted with -3.75 vision. I'm 20 years old. Every year I go in for an eye exam and I always leave with a slightly stronger prescription. Is there any way I can reduce the speed of eyesight loss or possibly stop it altogether? I don't want to have a -5.00 vision or something like that a few years from now.

Yes there are people your age who prevented unnecessary deterioration in their natural vision. Some even have gone on to better their eyesight.

The reason you get people questioning this possibility is usually because they are badly informed on the subject. It's also possible for a select few to view other peoples ability to improve their eyesight as a threat to their own ability to make a living (if they sell glasses.)

You will probably get an answer from someone claiming scientific evidence proves improving natural eyesight is impossible.
But if you are genuinely interested in the truth then that person must have research to back it up. I've seen many answers given in that manner and they ALWAYS refuse to give an example of research.

Online you can't believe everything you see or hear so be careful that the opinion has hard fact behind it and not some underhanded motivation.

Bad vision usually occurs from bad vision habits mixed with no interest in having detailed vision. Sure they might complain about the bad vision sometimes. But in all honesty these people don't really care if their eyes don't see 100% clearly. They can see a positive side in not being able to see things like peoples faces. If these things are just a blur then they are free to ignore anything that they don't care to know about.

The reason why some people struggle to get any improvement in eyesight once they get older is because their eyeball has changed shape. No overnight miracle can change that.

BTW If you like taking a dip into the world of ortho-k....then please feel free to chat with ortho-k's number one representative (pennybar)

I looked at pennybars sources. The first one explains what is shortsightedness/longsightness. It did however describes the problem being due to the crystalline lens only. But the animations themselves clearly show the farsighted eye as being shorter from front to back than the shortsighted one.

The second source features a long essay on why eye exercises don't work. 99% of what is written is a character assassination attempt on the author of a book called "better vision without glasses". There is no attempt to provide any scientific research to explain why the book is flawed. It simply references the list of contents and hopes some of the terms sound funny. They picked out a sentence that says 'close your eyes when in bright sunlight.' They are making out that closing your eyes is something only weird people do. The book does not suggest to stare at the sun to become blind. If the author of the book had done that I doubt he would have been able to have written the book later or have been a good role model for demonstrating the books credentials.

The article labelled anyone who collaborated with Dr.Bates as being a faddist. It describes people who buy his book as 'gullible'. The only 1% of the essay that ventures into any scientific breakdown of the issue is when they mention a few years ago an association for optometrists took a company to court for misleading advertising and slowness in refunding of money back to customers (the product probably a guarantee to work or get your money back.) NO FAULT was found with the company but they agreed to pay various costs.
The other potential scientific fact was one claiming most optometrists and ophthalmologists do not agree with the theories behind eye improvement programs. No problem asking the opinion of professionals but what survey are they having this fact on?

It's logical that optometrists in general will not provide support because they are paid salaries by companies that sell glasses. Also ophthalmologists know the exercises do not claim to cure eye diseases so it does not feature in their area of practice.

The article discusses the curing of eye diseases and dyslexia. This is confusing the reader because the books and people that were previously mentioned are not involved in any eye disease diagnosis or curation.

I am afraid that there is no natural method of improving or halting a decrease in eyesight, but, absent any other underlying cause, your vision should become stable within a few years. The only way to improve vision is with corrective lenses, Lasik and Ortho-K (orthokeratology). You should not have Lasik surgery until you vision has stabilized, meaning your prescription is unchanged for two years. Vision usually stabilizes in your early to mid-twenties. Ortho-K is available to any good candidate of any age. Simplistically, Ortho-K is a method that uses special contact lenses that you sleep with almost every night which temporarily changes the shape of your eye so you do not have to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day. The correction seldom lasts more than two days, ergo sleeping with the lenses every night. You will notice that the other answerer used the operative phrase "thought to reduce myopia" meaning there is no actual proof or evidence.

There is also no scientific proof that eye exercises, eye vitamins or eating foods high in beta-carotene (carrots) or lutein will improve visual acuity. Numerous studies have been conducted and continue to be conducted on this subject and to date all results are inconclusive. If there were any real proof that any natural remedy could improve vision, believe me eye docs would not be able to suppress the information from the public. Anyone who says different is putting those that need corrective lenses or who have optical disease or problems at risk. Listening to quacks is dangerous to your health. Certain vitamin deficiencies can cause eye problems, but this usually occurs in poor countries where people are malnourished or because an individuals system cannot process the vitamin(s).

EDIT: If you decide to follow the rambling incoherent advice of the answerer who accused me be of being a representative of Ortho-K, your vision will not improve. I am not advocating orthokeratology or any other means of improving vision, just stating facts from known sources. You will find that most of this person's sources offer very little information unless you pay for it or buy a book.. He is not following Yahoo community guidelines by being insulting and distributing misinformation which could be reported,

ortho-k is thought to slow myopia progression

There are several different ways to slow your myopia with varying degrees of success. The best new information within the last few years is that outdoor time is very good at slowing myopic progression. You don't have to read less or differently, you just need to add in the outdoor time to obtain the benefit.

Check out http://www.MyopiaPrevention.org It has over 170 references on all sorts of techniques with direct links to the articles if you are interested, along with lots of information presented in both comprehensive and summary form.

Myopia prevention or control is a complicated subject and requires that you read the available information to educate yourself. Then you need to find a doctor who is interested in working with you. Not all are.

As an example, these are possible solutions: outdoor time, orthok (orthokeratology), bifocal soft (center distance) contact lenses for near esophores and maybe others, bifocal glasses for near esophores with lag of accommodation, specialized glasses and contacts currently available only in Hong Kong but probably worldwide within a couple of years if the trials work out (MyoVision and MiSight lenses), possibly a low carb diet, other stuff. As you can see, not a simple topic, but the research is happening right now and lots of advances in the last few years. You need an interested doctor to help guide you depending on your situation.

Your glasses are probably slowing making your eyes worse. The good news is that you are older than when most people are changing the most. So even if you did everything wrong, the odds are in your favor that you won't progress a lot more. Still, you want to do anything you can to put things in your favor because you may not be the "average" case. Start with two hours a day outdoors. (With sun protection.)

Enjoy the journey. And remember: Eat vegetables, fruits, tree nuts, olive oil, water and protein. Exercise. Get enough sleep, more than you think you need probably. Develop a circle of caring friends. Your eyes are part of your whole body.
