Every time you need to

The best way maintain good eyesight; See an eye specialist for a comprehensive eye exam every 2-3 years, if your corrective lenses-see the eye doc once a years. Do not smoke and try to avoid second hand smoke. Eating a diet rich in red, yellow and green leafy vegetables may help you maintain good vision and avoid getting certain diseases, like age related macular degeneration and certain cancers, but will not improve eye sight.

Just make a proper schedule after taking a meeting with your family doctor or some specialist, because in this way you can save yourself from some unscheduled visits.

As often as you can afford to pay for it I suppose. You shouldn't need to see one very often at all except an optician every couple of years for prescription glasses. What's the problems exactly
