Can you repair or fill in a scratch on prescription eyeglass lenses?!

Question: Can you repair or fill in a scratch on prescription eyeglass lenses?
I have a pair of bifocals that I really like, but I scratched one of the lenses.

Is there a way to remove the scratch or fill it in? Or must it be replaced?

Answers:

Scratches can't be removed. You have to replace the lens.

I don't know what Debbie is talking about...if she works in an optical store , then she must have just started this morning to come out with a statement like that.

EDIT

UV is quite mistaken. It is NOT even technically possible.

No optical lab has any type of equipment that could possibly " shave " and repolish the front of a lens.

The front surface of an optical lens is moulded and cannot be retouched in any way, shape or form.

The generators that grind the backside of a lens only work with a full size lens to begin with. A lens that has already been cut can't be put back in . It would have to go in backwards anyway

To repair a scratch, you must shave and 'polish' the lens surface to a level that is below that scratch. Shaving a lens will alter is surface curvature which will also alter it's power...

Now for a bifocal, it's even harder, as there are 2 curves on the front surface...

Technically it can be done, but to makesure that the power stays the same, it will cost more to polish out the scratches than to.... mould a completely new lens... :)

Sorry, but you must replace it.

To replace it you need to contact the company but it often costs more to replace lens then buying a new one...so your better off buy a new pair of glasses.

i work in a glasses store

Yes. Here is a search page on that so you can choose what suits you................

They really can't do anything about scratched lenses. They could replace it with an identical one though, that shouldn't make any difference to the glasses if you really like them.
