New contact user, having problems.. any tips?!

Question: New contact user, having problems.. any tips?
I went to the eye doctor today to get contacts for the second time. The first was 10 years ago and I didn't succeed in getting them out.. and I gave up.. I was only 13 at the time. I went in determined to do it this time.

The guy gave me an hour to try, while he wanted, helped and gave tips... and I failed :/ It took nearly all the time and I only managed to get the left one in... Since time was almost up he put the second one in for me, which was horrible, I could feel my eye fighting him, but he did manage to get it in.

Then it came time to take them out and I couldn't even get one of them out.. I feel I was making a little progress on getting them in.. but out was another story! When time was up it took him only one try for my left eye, but a couple for my right since I couldn't stop blinking, but he got them out.

I had problems holding my top lid open, I just couldn't do it... and I couldn't stare straight on at my finger as it came out my eye. I managed to get the one in by putting it in the bottom and slowly looking up till it slid on.

I am having the time of my life pinching my eye to get the thing out... and sliding it to the white bottom and pinching it out which I thought would be the best way to do it is impossilbe! I think my thumb is to fat or something, lol.

I can't stand to look in the mirror either, seems I make the most progress either way when someone else is watching me and guiding me and I don't have to watch.. everytime I looked in the mirror to see how I was doing I blinked alot.

He gave me until Thursday to practice (w/o the actual contacts.. he gave me solution to use so I don't irrate my eyes... I'm supposed to just stick my finger in my eye and try to touch it) and I'm scared I won't be able to get it and waste my money and worse... not get what I want so badly.

Can anyone give me tips.. how can I make this work?

Answers:

First you have to relax. Second it takes practice just like most things. I used to fit people with contacts and teach them how to put them in and take them out. When it came time for me to wear them myself, it took me almost 30 minutes each time I put them in for about a week. After that, I didn't use a mirror and had no trouble inserting or removing. To get them out, I usually touch the lens and slide it off to the outer edge of the eye where it will tend to wrinkle a bit and pop out. Too bad I can't help you in person, everyone I taught seemed to catch on right away. Best of luck to you and just be patient and keep trying.
