What brand contact lenses are best for powers over -12?!

Question: What brand contact lenses are best for powers over -12?
Hi,

Thanks for any who can help.

I am extremely myopic (-12, both eyes) and my eyes are steadily getting worse (I have degenerative myopia - vision will get worse throughout my life). So, right now I use Acuvue Hydraclear disposable lenses. Unfortunately, they only seem to come up to power -12. I'm pretty sure I'm now beyond that. Does anyone have recommendations on any lenses that exist in the higher powers? I have naturally dry eyes as well, so something that accounts for that would be good.

Any recommendations would be helpful. I'm just trying to get an idea on what options are out there.

Thanks.

Answers:

no, for a -12.00 myope "glasses" is almost never the answer. the optical quality & cosmesis are usually not great in -12.00. need to stay in contacts.

Coopervision's "Proclear" goes to -20.00, thats probably your best bet b/c they're very inexpensive. they're also made of a material (omafilcon) thats the only lens material FDA approved for use on a clinically dry eye.

there are plenty of "custom-made" contacts you could have...but those are quite expensive.

edit to Footprintz: ciba's precision uv is being discontinued 03/31/11 FYI. sad b/c it was a unique material and we used it in both high minus and high plus cases. i agree it would be a great option in this case, but you can't get them anymore

The Focus monthlies go to - 15.00

Precision UV go to - 16.00 ( monthly disposable )

Proclear go to - 20.00 ( monthly disposable )

There are also several conventional ( non disposable) lenses that go up to - 20.00 such as the Silsoft , Durasoft 2, Hydrosoft, CSI, ...and others.

I think u might need some glasses, or check to the eye doctor. Cause if u don't do both ways ur eyes will get worser. I think it will be best to avoid contacts for a well.
