Having lasik Friday quick question?!

Question: Having lasik Friday quick question?
I had my pre exam done and they said my corneal thickness was 515/510. The O.D said it is kind of borderline and she told me I might have to have PRK instead of Lasik but the Dr. (board certified ophthalmologist looked over my chart and a few hours later they called and said he though Lasik would be fine. Anyone know if this sounds ok? Obviously I hear the stories of bad things but what else is new but I have 10 friends that have had it and love it. Any thoughts? Thanks

Answers:

The Optometrist who told you your corneas were borderline is not a surgeon. The M.D. (surgeon) who told you you would be fine is more correct. He has more experience in determining if a pt can or can't have surgery. 500+ is a good number to have Lasik surgery but it also depends on what your prescription is to start with. The higher your prescription is means the more corneal tissue will have to be lasered and reshaped to correct your vision. If you have a high Rx and 515/510 thickness corneas will mean you will have less corneal thickness once you are done. You really want to have a lot more left over in case you have to do it again and trust me, 99% of the people who have Lasik surgery will at some point have to do a touch up because the eyes are always changing and Lasik surgery is not a permanent fix to your problem. Years ago, the FDA set a minimum thickness of 250 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that means if your corneas get that thin, you can't have anymore laser.

"99% of the people who have Lasik surgery will at some point have to do a touch up"

that is absolutely false.

and 510 is pretty thin.
