My Grandma tore her retna but doesn't know how she did it...Possible reason!

Question: My Grandma tore her retna but doesn't know how she did it...Possible reasons?
My Grandma who is 61 tore the retna in one of her eyes and is going into surgery today. She reckons she doesn't know how it happened. What are some possible causes?

Answers:

Unless she banged her head or something, it's probably nothing she did. Lots of people are predisposed to retinal tears, either through a pre-existing retinal condition (like lattice degeneration) or other risk factors like being very nearsighted. It could also be from an aging change (a vitreous detachment with traction pulling on the retina). It's also possible that a retinal tear can happen for basically no reason... in fact, that's so common that we have a special word for it: "idiopathic".
Good luck! The sooner a tear gets fixed, the better the odds are it won't be a big issue in the future.

I'm an optometrist.

a coughing fit, a really hard sneeze, i popped a blood vessel in my eye and the whites of my one eyeball were completely red for a week just cause i had a coughing fit last summer. eyes are really sensitive.

im just guessing
but maybe its due to her staring at the sun?
she could have just looked to see and ended up with burning her retina out

You could try doing an online search, then the library or an expert can help you.
