Aspheric or Hi-index: which lenses are flatter?!

Question: Aspheric or Hi-index: which lenses are flatter?
My prescription isnt that bad. I was checking out Cohen's Optical lenses page, and they list Aspheric and Hi-index. Which is better? I want the best lenses, for both vision and appearance.

Answers:

Aspheric lenses and high index lenses are two different things designed to fix two different problems.

Aspheric lenses are most useful to make the lenses flatter in cases of people who have a high plus prescription (gets rid of that "coke bottle eyeglasses" effect). This is because a plus lens is thick in the center and thin on the edges. Aspheric lenses are also helpful in cases of higher amount of astigmatism to help with distortion.

High index lenses are most useful to make the lenses thinner and look nicer in people who have high minus prescriptions. This is because a minus lens is thin in the center but thick on the edges.

So I can't tell you what is best for your prescription, because I don't know what that is. And more importantly, I don't know what frame you are selecting which can make a big difference too.

This is why glasses should be ordered from an optical from an experienced optician -- and why people should not try to order glasses by themselves online. Yea you might save a little money, but in all honesty, you don't know what you are doing.

I am an optometry intern.
