I have glasses for my eyes but don't wear them anymore?Read details?!

Question:

I have glasses for my eyes but don't wear them anymore?Read details?

I know it's bad but after 4 months the glasses started hurting my eyes. And I couldn't see any better then before. Plus the eye doctor told me to wear them all the time; I was diagnosed with glaucoma along with going to the eye doctor. The glasses are supposed to help stop the spread f it. I haven’t been there in about over a year. I told my physician but only gave me an eye exam I only failed with one eye. I don’t know why my eyes are hurting and so sensitive to light because one doctor says I have glaucoma the normal doctor doesn’t agree. I don’t know what to do help.

Answers:

If you have glaucoma or are a glaucoma suspect, then one year is way too long without a thorough eye exam. Especially if you are having eye problems now. Did the last eye doctor do a goldmann tonometry to check your eye pressure at the last exam or just the "air puff" test (air puff is very unrelieable). In addition to the Goldmann, did he do an OCT scan or a GDX test or perform a baseline Visual Field test? A couple of these tests used together can determine if a patient has glaucoma. Also, if you have glaucoma, he should have put you on some type of prescribed drop regimen. A regular family physician has no way of performing these tests, they must be done in an optometrists or ophthalmologists office. Thus a regular physician can't say whether or not you have glaucoma. They have no way to test for it.
Hope this helps a little.

PS: Glasses won't help glaucoma

In response to Paul B, he does make some very good points about the glaucoma evaluation, but you don't have to go to an ophthalmologist for your glaucoma eval (depending on where you live). I know that in TN, Optometrists are well qualified to treat medical eye conditions such as glaucoma. Many times an ophthalmologist is only used for certain types and severties of glaucoma. Many people have the misconception that optometrists only do refractions and fit glasses or contacts, this is very untrue. The optometrists I work for have close relationships with ophthalmologists in our area and know to only refer to the ophthalmologist if treatment is beyond their scope of practice. In fact the practice I work for is about 75% medical eye conditions including glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, eye infections, minor eye injuries, keratoconus, Age Related Macular Degeneration and many more.
