Question for Princeidoc (Hopefully you'll see this!!!)?!

Question for Princeidoc (Hopefully you'll see this!!!)?

Good morning. I could not email you or IM you but I have a question for the good doctor this morning:

This past Wednesday I woke up with pink eye in my right eye. I went into work to have the OD look at me so he could (hopefully) write me an Rx for some drops. I am also fighting a cold that's been hanging on for the past 3 weeks and the OD said that cold caused my pink eye and therefore it is not bacterial so Rx drops won't really help. He gave me some sample Systane drops and told me to use them as needed and to wash my hands often...if it gets worse, I am to let him know.

This morning, I woke up with pink eye in my left eye now. Sheesh!!! No pain - just the redness and the crusty goop. And my right eye seemed to be getting better and was also goopey again this morning. So I am now putting the drops in both eyes and I intend to talk to my OD on Monday.

My question is this: I am supposed to take my son swimming today. Is it safe to swim with pink eye?

It is a public pool and I don't want to spread it. My OD said that I am contagious until it goes away, but I didn't know if it could be transmitted through chlorinated pool water. I certainly don't want to make it worse for myself, or spread it to other people.

Thanks so much!!!

Willow09 - I lost the sample bottle that my OD gave me at work on Friday...LOL So I haven't been using it...they itch occasionally, and I'm trying my hardest NOT to rub them. I just threw my pillow cases in the wash and my hands are nearly raw from washing them all the time, as I have two young children at home here that I am trying NOT to infect!!!

All great answers! I'm so glad you saw my question Princeidoc! I haven't had pink eye since I was a young girl and even after being an Optician for so long, I never really knew about swimming while being contagious. No one has ever asked me about it before so when I came down with it, I didn't know! LOL And, I didn't think to ask my OD before I left work the other day. Didn't occur to me until this morning when I talking to my husband about taking our oldest to the pool for the afternoon.

Incidentally, we bagged to pool idea anyway today. Just didn't have time to go...but we plan to go tomorrow so thanks ALL OF YOU for all of your great advice!!!

Good Morning! Just in case PrinceIDoc doesn't get this in time, I asked my OD husband your question. He said that it is unlikely that the pinkeye would be transmitted through the chlorinated water. The more likely means of transmission would be if you rubbed your eye before climbing the ladder, then someone else used the ladder and then rubbed their eye.

Just be mindful about keeping your hands away from your eyes and everything should be fine.
