Nausea and bifocals?!

Question:

Nausea and bifocals?

i just changed to bifocals and am having a lot of trouble getting nauseated. is there anything i can do to help this?

Answers:

If you take your bifocals and hold them out in front of you....and move them left to right or right to left...sort of back and forth....you'll notice that the top part's image moves. It'll move faster than you are moving the glasses. Depending on the power of the lens, and it's direction or sign...e.g. -1.00 for instance or +1.00...whatever...the image will move either with you, or against you, the way you're moving them.

You'll also notice that the bottom part moves faster, or... slower depending again on the power sign.

When you are wearing these new glasses and move your head, your visual field picked up by your eye, and your brain 'feels' that you are rotating. Imean it can SEE that it's moving faster down there as if you WERE rotating!

Your brain is NOT used to the bottom part moving at a different speed...so it thinks you ARE ROTATING....hence the world is spinning and/or you feel nausea.

That's the reason. How to handle it? Well, you kind of have to work your way through the learning curve. You can use these glasses for different periods at a time, slowly increasing the amount of time you wear them, till you just wear them all the time. The more you wear them, the sooner your brain will figure it out that things aren't spinning or rotating.

Once you do, it'll be nice to be able to wear them.

If you had gotten the progressive lenses, then the power at a distance and the power at the bottom would be a progressive change. You think you're spinning with THESE? Those take a month or so to get used to, even if you've used bifocals in the past.

You'll figure out your own learning curve with this. It doesn't really take all that long once you kind of understand what's happening.
