Answers:

You need to be very responsible with cleaning and caring for contact lenses. They need to be cleaned and disinfected every day, using proper cleaning solutions. Failure to properly care for lenses can lead to infections, ulceration, and abrasions of the cornea. All of these things can lead to blindness. These health risks increase if you sleep in your lenses, especially those meant for daytime wear, but also overnight ones.

Never wear lenses that are torn, scratched, or damaged in any way, not even for a few hours. Contacts are designed to move a little on your eye, and damaged contacts can easily scratch your eye and cause infections.

Wearing your lenses for too long, or overnight, can lead to oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) – your eyes will literally grow new blood vessels that will make them look permanently bloodshot. If you continue to over-wear your lenses, you will eventually become completely intolerant to contacts altogether. Never wear your lenses for longer than 12 hours a day – or less if you feel them drying out by the end of the day.

If you lose or drop a contact lens and don’t have cleaning solution with you, you can not put them back in! Never use saliva, tap water, bottled or distilled water, or anything other than an appropriate cleaning solution to rinse or clean your contacts. Doing so could put you at greater risk for infection. Carry a travel-sized bottle of solution in your purse or bag (and make sure to keep an eye on the expiry date), especially if you are going somewhere like the beach.

All that said, contacts are a major pain in the butt, but they are far more comfortable and versatile than glasses, at least in my opinion. Just follow all the instructions and you’ll be fine. However, don’t ever take the health of your eyes for granted, and abide by the Golden Rule of contact lens wear – when in doubt, take them out!
