What do they do at the Optomitrists?!

Question:

What do they do at the Optomitrists?

I've never been and im 15.
It's a bit sad but im kind of scared what they will do to me. I know i don't have good eye sight. One of my eyes can see great, but my other can see good up close, but not so good far away. How do they diagnose my vision and what tools and whigmagigs and gadgets do they use. And how do i get glasses and contacts.
Kind of stupid question, but i don't know :)

Answers:

Um, wow. That's kind of sad that you have never got your eyes tested and you're 15 because I'm positive that schools give students eye exams year-round... or that is how it is in Dade County, Florida. Anywho, there is nothing to be afraid of. They usually first get you to sit down in the front and the assistant sits behind this weird looking machine (it's kind of small and sits on a table). They then tell you to look forward (sometimes there is a picture in the hole thingie) and then they blow air into your eyes. They just do this to test the pressure on your eyes. Then they take you to the back room and you sit in the chair. You don't have to do anything but say yes or no to the optometrist's questions; there, they put these big magnify like things in front of your eyes and ask you if you can see the letters on the far side of the wall. That's about it. And in order to get your glasses, you have to pay an extra fee. Usually to get your eyes tested, it's like $100 dollars... then it's an extra $150 for the frames. Then you have to pay for the lenses. So the total cost is around $300 dollars total. You don't have to get your glasses as soon as you're done getting tested. You just look around at the frames around the wall and try them on to see one that fits your face, and you go to the counter and tell them the model that you want and they order them. You only have to pay for the glasses once they arrive. And for contact lenses, you usually just pay $75 total (not including eye exam). You just tell the optometrist that you want contacts and tell them that it is your first time so that they can teach you how to put the contacts in. And you also have to watch a stupid movie about taking care of you lenses. It usually takes one to two weeks to get your glasses or contacts.
