Answers:

Your eye doctor is looking for signs of glaucoma, a progressive disease consisting of elevated intraocular pressure that can result in damaging the optic nerve, thus constricting your visual field (measured by Goldmann or Humphrey visual field testing), and causing loss of sight due to loss of peripheral vision.

Glaucoma can be treated medically with eye drops. However, if the pressures cannot be controlled with medication alone, then a procedure called a trabeculectomy can be performed.

The below link has a TON of information on how glaucoma is diagnosed, treatments, and prognoses.

The reason glaucoma is so important to detect early is because once any damage is done, it is irreversible, even with treatment. The treatments only protect remaining visual function.
