Where is the best place to go for an eye exam and prescription?!

Question:

Where is the best place to go for an eye exam and prescription?

I've never had a thorough eye exam nor have I ever needed glasses. However, in the last couple of years my vision has really deteriorated. I'm certain that I need to start wearing glasses, but I don't know where to start. Are places like Texas State Optical (TSO), Pearl Vision, Today's Vision a good place to go because you can have an eye exam and get glasses? Or am I better off going to an actual eye doctor and then getting glasses elsewhere? I'm looking for the best overall experience, not necessarily the cheapest. Obviously, I want to get the most for my money, but I have no clue here. Any suggestions?

Answers:

I recommend seeing a private practice optometrist. You'll get someone who owns his business and cares about his patient. If you have problems with your prescription, you'll see the same doctor who saw you the 1st time. Often chains have 2-3 doctors and you never know who you'll see.

You are always entitled to a copy of your prescription, but I'd recommend having it filled where the prescription was written. Getting it filled elsewhere creates "issues." You're splitting responsibility - if you take my prescription to Big Vision Chain, and the prescription is right, but they've fit is badly, it's my word against theirs.

For the best overall experience, get your exam and lenses at the same place.

P.S. To disagree with another poster, you don't need an ophthalmologist for a standard eye exam. An optometrist is the "primary care" doctor. You only need an MD if you need surgery or speciality treatment. Optometrists have 4 years of graduate school dealing with nothing but eyes.
