Youngest age for retinal detachment?!

Question:

Youngest age for retinal detachment?

What is the youngest age anyone has gotten a retinal detachment from high myopia? (not trauma)

Answers:

That's a question I haven't ever seen on Yahoo answers. I am not really sure what is the youngest age ever recorded for a myopic retinal detachment. The youngest I have seen personally in my practice, as I recall, was 8 years old. Myopia of -5.00 or less very seldom causes retinal detachment. As the degree of myopia increases past this level, though, the risks increase relative to the increase in myopia. Most myopia of -5.00 or greater falls into the category of hereditary progressive myopia. I myself have hereditary progressive myopia. This type of myopia tends to first present itself around the age of 8 or so and tends to increase throughout adolescence until about the age of 18 to 21 at which time most patients become stable. Because this condition begins around age 8, seldom do you see a patient progress to greater than -5.00 until late adolescence. That's why you seldom see retinal detachments related to myopia very early in life. Hope this helped.
