What is my prescription?!

Question:

What is my prescription?

My doctor wrote down -9.00 for each eye. Since I wear contact lenses, is the prescription for my contacts or glasses?

Thanks

I thought contacts had a lower prescription, since contacts are differectly on top of your eye? And glasses has more, since it's farther away.

Answers:

If the only information your doctor wrote was -9.00 then that would work ONLY for your eyeglasses. A contact prescription must have other additional information 1) base curve 2) overall diameter of the contact 3) brand of contact. In addition, because your prescription is so strong it will be necessary for the doctor to take into consideration your vertex distance (the distance between the examination instrument and your eye). Any power over -4.00 will need to be altered to take vertex distance into consideration. The higher the power goes over -4.00 the more of an adjustment your doctor will need to make. So, you would not be able to purchase contacts from a dispenser with this Rx.
