why is it important for people to know this
Ovulation is when the ovum (egg) is released from a mature follicle on the ovary. It usually occurs around mid cycle (ie around day 14 if day 1 is the first day of your period). It is important to know this if you are trying to fall pregnant, so you know the best time to have sex. However, the timing of ovulation can vary from person to person - sometimes it is not mid cycle but a bit earlier or later; also people have different cycle lengths than the average of 28 days. If you want more detail - it is mostly endocrinology (the study of hormones, where they come from, what they do etc).
It would take volumes. it is important for men and women to know about this because it plays a major role in how life is created.
