Period troubles?!

Question: I got my first period (ever) on November 17 and it lasted for more than 7 days and it was heavy prolonged bleeding. I then started taking iron supplements and my period ended. Now on December 17 it came again but SUPPEERR light. It seems like I barely have my period! What's wrong? It was really heavy and non-stop before and now it barely comes down...

There is quite a bit of variation in how long it takes for a girl to establish the regular menstrual cycle that most women experience in adulthood. And even after the menstrual cycle matures and becomes regular, this "regularity" may differ greatly from woman to woman. This irregularity can give you a concern because you feel there is something wrong going on.

So, some understanding about the normal variations that occur in early adolescence and young adulthood can help ease some of the anxiety.

The cycles in the early years after menstruation has begun typically are a few days longer than in adults. In addition, the lengths of time for irregularity may commonly be longer in these first couple of years.

During the first two years after a girl begins having periods, up to 50% of the cycles occur without ovulation. By about 5 years after the onset of menses, 80% of the cycles have ovulation occurring within them. Without ovulation, the timing of menstrual cycles is not too predictable which is why periods are so variable during the first two years after they have begun.

There are other reasons why a girl could go for an extended period of time without a period. However, you can see that it is quite normal for a girl to have somewhat irregular periods during the first two years of menses. Barring concern for pregnancy or other health problems that could be a factor in not menstruating, many doctors wait until two periods have been missed before doing any significant evaluation for causes.

The most common causes for missed periods in teenagers are pregnancy, stress, and a condition called polycystic ovaries.

I would suggest that you talk to your Mum about any concerns you have and that she will explain to you that this is normal and that your body is still developing and that it might take some time before you will have a regular period. If in a couple of years your period has not become regular, your Mom might want to call your doctor to discuss the matter in order that he/she may decide whether or not it is necessary to make an appointment for further evaluation, but until then, be patient and enjoy the experience of being a young woman.

Good luck :)

It's actually normaly to be irregular for the first couple of YEARS. Don't worry, but if it's really bothering you, or if it seems really abnormal to you, go see a doctor.

Your first year will be unpredictable.

Mines like that, I think when its really heavy your stressed and when its light your sorta relaxing.

well, when you first start having it, it wont be very like idk...the same everytime...like when I first started I only got my period like once every 2 months for a while, and sometimes I had it longer than others...its still unconsistant, and I've had mine for like 2 years.

I wouldn't be complaining I wish I could say that my periods have lighten up like that. It's just the way your body reacted to the supplements. I know when I start taking my multi vitamin it makes my . a lot shorter.

Your period is very irregular for the first year that you have it. I remember bleeding very heavily the first time and then bleeding perhaps a drop the second time. Continue the iron if you should bleed heavily again, but just know it will be irregular in the first year. If it continues to be irregular/painful, see a gynocologist.

Nothing is wrong. It may take a few periods for your body to settle into a routine. Some girls have their 1st period than skip a few months...now that is scary. Also other things in your life can effect your cycle.. like stress. Why are you taking iron supplements? Did your doctor tell you to take them? If not you might want to check with doctor before continuing taking them. Not all females need iron supplements.
