I have missed my period by 9 days. Am I pregnant?!

Question: I have taken 6 over the counter pregnancy tests ( EPT and 1st Response). I also did a blood test with my doctor. All tests came back negative. I still have not gotten my period? I'm very very worried

You may be taking these tests too early. Pregnancy 101:

On Day 14 of a 28-day cycle, the ovary releases an egg (ovulation). The egg travels to the fallopian tube http://z.about.com/d/p/440/e/f/10339.jpg... where if it is not fertilized in 24 hours it dies. If it is fertilized, it travels to the uterus and implants if the uterine lining is viable (able to support pregnancy). The journey from tube to uterus takes 3-5 days.

After implantation, the body will begin excreting HCG (the "pregnancy hormone") into the urine, detectable about 12 days after a missed period. Some women don't excrete enough HCG to be detectable and must have a serum (blood) HCG test such as you had.

HCG is detectable in the blood about 2 weeks after conception (fertilization). You may be right at the edge of those 2 weeks and therefore aren't testing positive if you are pregnant.

Some other thoughts regarding missed periods and their causes:

1. Pregnancy.
2. Recent miscarriage or abortion.
3. Loss/gain of 10+ pounds. Affects hormones.
4. Recently-begun exercise program. Affects hormones.
5. Illness. From common colds to ovarian cysts to adrenal disorders, these can affect hormones.
6. Medications. Especially birth control medications.
7. STDs.
8. Stress. Even everyday stress can affect those adrenals, which then affect your hormones.
9. Age. Some girls take up to 3 years after menarche (first period) to become regular.

You don't mention whether you had unprotected sex and when; unprotected sex just before or during ovulation poses the greatest pregnancy risk.

I understand that you are worried and I commend you on wanting to know as early as possible if you are pregnant. You may want to wait another 7 days (I know, it's difficult) and repeat your urine or blood tests.

In response to your questions.... Yes I did have sex at a bad time. The person I was with was supposed to have had worn a condom.... I think he did but I am unsure.... I know this sounds dumb... I am not super experienced and did not check to make surfe it was on, it was dark.... Report It

  • Period can be very irregular. So if all the tests came back negative, there is nothing to worry about. Are you underweight, or are you under alot of stress? These can results in not having your period. If you are still concerned, talk to your doctor.

    Good luck! =]

i get my period every other month... its okay, ur cycle is a little off now..

in fact, very few women actually have the 'normal' 28 day cycle.
u may be regular for many many years and then all of a sudden miss by like a week or more.. its okay, not to worry.

    :) good luck

    happy holidays

    1. If you have been having sex, you could be pregnant.

    2. The purpose of sex is having babies, that's why we call them 'reproductive' organs and not 'just-for-sh*ts-and-giggles' organs.

    3. The only form of birth control that is 100% is not having sex.

    4. It only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg.

    5. There are 300,000,000 sperm in each male ejaculate (so what do the odds favor).

    its probably just stress

Don't worry, periods aren't always on time. Sometimes you may skip a few months or just get it later or earlier then planed.

    Hope this helped!
